Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, a Side-Scrolling Nostalgia Bomb

This gory, 16-bit tale of a cybernetic ninja reigns supreme

Any millennial who grew up with a SNES or Sega 16-bit system in their house has probably played a side scroller before. Whether your first game was Castlevania or Metroid, you probably have fond memories of it. Well, it’s time to get excited again.

What is Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider?

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is a 16-bit hack-and-slash side-scroller developed by JoyMasher and published by The Arcade Crew

You play as the titular cyber-ninja, Moonrider, on a quest for vengeance. A super soldier created to serve the means of the evil authoritarians who oppress earth, you reject your cybernetic programming and opt to lash out at your creators.

Though we haven’t gotten to play it yet, Moonrider looks just like the games from our childhood, with snappy attacks and movement, deep lore told via in-game dialogue screens, and a head-banging 16-bit soundtrack to go along with everything. We’re also a fan of the blood and gore.

In the game, you can collect various powerups that will make your character more powerful and enable you to customize your fighting style. This aspect of the game is a classic element with a new twist, so we can’t wait to see how it’s implemented.
