Frontier Developments, the developers behind the upcoming Warhammer-themed RTS, Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin, recently unveiled a gameplay breakdown for one of the four factions in the game, the Stormcast Eternals. In addition to giving us some insight into the type of units that will become available, the developers also explained new controller mechanics specifically designed for the game.
Real-time-strategy games have always been best played on PC, though there have been console versions for iconic titles like Starcraft and Command and Conquer. However, regardless of the title, the controls have always left a bit to be desired when it came to controller play. Frontier is looking to switch that up with what they call the “Direct Step” system. This brings the usual PC RTS controls to the controller. Learn more about the system below:
Finally, an RTS That Knows What It’s Doing
While it may be too early to gauge, veteran RTS players will appreciate the almost five-minute gameplay walkthrough. Simple but often overlooked mechanics like the ability to snap and group units easily are the bread and butter of what make real-time strategy games so fun.
Because Realms of Ruin seems to be PvP focused, it might have veterans excited about the prospect of a popular, well-developed RTS game. I, for one, appreciate the amount of detail they are putting into both the Warhammer lore, and their attention to detail of gameplay mechanics.
Players can wishlist Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin on Steam. An open beta of the game will be available on July 7, 2023.
