ASUS ROG Ally, A Windows PC That Fits in Your Hand

A new handheld has entered the arena.

ASUS ROG Ally is a new handheld gaming device launching later this May and might be a major competitor to the Steam Deck.

A new hands-on preview from Tom’s Hardware shed more light on a brand-new handheld hitting the market on May 11, 2023. Unlike its predecessors, the ASUS ROG Ally will provide users with more freedom, with a Windows 11 operating system and two control sticks that act as a mouse.

Main Takeaways

  • Pricing has not been announced, but it is expected to be more expensive than the higher-end Steam Decks.
  • Two processor choices are available, the AMD Ryzen Z1 (6-core) and Ryzen Z1 Extreme (8-core).
  • 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
  • 7-inch 1080p touchscreen display with 16:9 aspect ratio and 120 Hz refresh rate, higher refresh rate and resolution than the Steam Deck.
  • The ASUS ROG Ally has full Windows capabilities, able to run Steam, Epic Games, Nvidia GeForce Now, Game Pass, etc.

Ultimately, the ROG Ally looks to be a serious competitor to the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch. With more powerful hardware, it will likely come down to pricing for gamers. With the most expensive Steam Deck at around $649, the ROG Ally will probably be the “quality” option for handheld gamers. The company has yet to announce what it will cost, but it will be revealed when the platform launches on May 11.

While only time will tell, the freedom of having what is essentially a pretty powerful computer in the palm of your hand may be enough alone to convince gamers to try out the new gaming handheld.

Players will be able to purchase the ROG Ally on the ASUS website.
