Needless to say, Activision Blizzard has been stuck in the news cycle the past few years and, often, not in a good light. With all of these things consuming the headlines, it can be easy to overlook what made Blizzard, once a small development team, great in the first place—making good games centered around innovation.
So, it’s more than a delight to hear that Blizzard will be entering the foray into the survival genre, a category that, while robust with titles, could use an injection of new energy.
What is the New Survival Game Blizzard is Working on?
According to Jez Corden, Editor at Windows Central, via the Rand al Thor 19 Podcast, the new game has been in development for some time and is codenamed Odyssey. According to the post, the new game is a mashup of other games in the genre, with crafting and shop mechanics similar to that of Fallout 76. The aesthetics are similar to the yet-to-be-released Everwild and Fable Legends.
Set in a fairy-tale, supposedly “almost steam-punk” fantasy world, there are some less clear aspects of the game. For instance, will this be an MMO experience or centered around multiplayer? Blizzard games have always been known to incorporate an element of online play, and the times where they have not have been rather disastrous, so we couldn’t see this being a single-player experience.
However, the distinction between a full MMO and smaller servers with a few hundred people is an important distinction and helps signal how large the game world could or would be.
Additional Confirmation
While Corden does have the credentials to confirm a game of this type, we’ve also got additional confirmation of the secret codename of the game via this Reddit post, via gaming journalist Jason Schreier, who currently works at Bloomberg News and was a reporter for Kotaku for almost a decade.
We know that we’re super excited to catch a glimpse of what it could be. Maybe–we’ll get a taste at the next Blizzcon.
