Conan Exiles Devs Speak About New Dune MMO

A new survival MMO that almost sounds too good to be true.

Dune: Awakening is an upcoming MMO developed by FUNCOM, the company that brought us the survival title Conan Exiles. In a recent interview with the game’s Creative Director, Joel Bylos, more light was shed on this ambitious open-world title.

According to Bylos,

Dune: Awakening features many of the classical MMO characteristics, but applied through a sandbox worldbuilding philosophy. You can build bases and customize them as you like and you are not limited in how and where you place them (apart from special cases).

Bylos goes on to say,

Players can explore the world alone, or together with their friends, forming groups and guilds to take on dungeons and harvest spice. There is both technological advancement where players learn to build new and greater technology through the acquisition of powerful schematics, as well as a robust skill and imprint system that allows players to define their playstyle in the game.

While these sorts of statements would seem overly ambitious for an indie game studio, it is the same studio that created Conan Exiles, which, in some ways, implemented similar gameplay mechanics. In addition, the team is familiar with the Dune franchise, having published Dune: Spice Wars in April of 2022.

Peaking in popularity 7 years ago, Conan Exiles still manages to average a concurrent user base of 10-20K players at any given time, an impressive feat, considering the crowded field that it finds itself in.

PC Gamer did a pretty in-depth video with the development team, which you can watch below.

While no official release date for Dune: Awakening has been set, the developers working on the game have been providing pretty consistent updates on their official website, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the upcoming title.
