Dead Space Remake – A Community-Driven Effort

Dismemberment-based combat returns after a long sleep

Dead Space, while a little dated by today’s standards, is still held up as an excellent Horror franchise, especially by its dedicated fanbase. The series spanned 3 games, in addition to novels, comics, and even movies, before ultimately being shelved after Dead Space 3 fell short of EA’s expectations. The series creator, Visceral Games, soon followed, leaving everyone wondering if we’d ever hear more on the exploits of the series protagonist, Isaac. The silence was finally broken by the announcement of a remake of the original game, led by EA’s Motive Studio.

Why is Dead Space Being Remade?

Let’s address the elephant in the room: Dead Space might have carried on with new entries and stories to this day if EA hadn’t suspended the franchise. So, why restart something they chose to stop in the first place?

It’s possible they saw the success of Capcom’s remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 and wanted to replicate that success, but that’s not the impression we’re getting.

Motive has mentioned the necessary graphical improvements, of course, but they aren’t content to stop there. They’re looking to add new content and modern refinements to the mix, specifically mentioning the lore outside the games themselves. They also formed a “Community Council” to engage with the fanbase on key facets of the design and to ensure they weren’t straying from the Dead Space experience in their pursuit of a modern take on the franchise.

This sounds like an honest attempt to bring back a beloved series. For both EA and the fans of the original, we hope it succeeds, and the next generation gets to experience the sights and scares we first enjoyed in 2008.

What is Dead Space?

Dead Space is a survival-horror, 3rd person shooter starring Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent to the Planet Cracker USG Ishimura. Clark is forced to respond to a distress signal and must fight off the transformed remains of the crew with repurposed industrial tools.

The main mechanic of combat consists of systematically disarming your opponents by lopping off their limbs, removing bladed implements, and forcing the encroaching necromorphs to struggle forward at a crawl, or blindly flail after being decapitated.

Isaac also spends time seeing to the ship itself, destroying oncoming asteroids and restarting systems to keep the situation on the Ishimura from deteriorating further.
