Diablo players returning for yet another season of the classic hack-and-slash experience may need a refresher on how to get the Staff of Herding in Diablo 3. Not to worry, we’re here to help you with a complete guide on obtaining all the necessary ingredients and crafting the Staff of Herding. The process will probably take a few hours, because we all know Diablo RNG is never kind.
How to Get the Staff of Herding in Diablo 3
To craft the Staff of Herding in Diablo 3, you need 50,000 Gold and the following materials:
- Plan: Staff of Herding – Drops randomly from Izual in Act IV
- Black Mushroom – Found in the Level 1 Cathedral in Act I
- Leoric’s Shinbone – Found in Leoric’s Manor in Act I
- Wirt’s Bell – Sold by Squirt the Peddler in Act II
- Liquid Rainbow – Found in the Mysterious Cave in Dahlgur Oasis in Act II
- Gibbering Gemstone – Found in the Caverns of Frost in The Bridge of Korsikk r in Act III
Note: If you are playing on a console, you only need the Plans, Black Mushroom, Leoric’s Shinbone, and Gibbering Gemstone to make the Staff of Herding.
Black Mushroom: Cathedral Level 1, Act I
The first ingredient to obtain is the Black Mushroom. Enter the Cathedral Level 1 in Act I, and find the room that looks like this:
You need the exact layout shown on the map above. It is possible the location does not generate for you, and if that’s the case, you’ll need to back out of your game and make another one. The Black Mushrooms are on the ground, and all you need to do is interact with them and pick them up.
Leoric’s Shinbone: Leoric’s Manor, Act I
The next ingredient to obtain is Leoric’s Shinbone. Teleport to Leoric’s Manor Courtyard in Act I and enter Leoric’s Manor. Look for the fireplace with Burnt Logs. Interact with the burnt logs, and you’ll get Leoric’s Shinbone. The fireplace looks like this:
Like the Black Mushroom, it is possible to get a map that doesn’t have it. In that case, restart your game and try again.
Wirt’s Bell: Squirt the Peddler, Act II
Head over to the Hidden Camp in Act II and find Squirt the Peddler, a merchant standing next to the Enchanting area. Speak with Squirt, navigate to the Miscellaneous tab, and find Wirt’s Bell for 100,000 Gold.
Liquid Rainbow: Dahlgur Oasis, Act II
The next item to obtain is the Liquid Rainbow. To get the Liquid Rainbow, travel to the Dahlgur Oasis in Act II and find the Mysterious Cave. The easiest way to do this is to make sure you have the Bounty called Clear the Mysterious Cave. That way, the map marker will lead you right to it, plus, the NPC may not even spawn without the Bounty.
Once you’re at the Dahlgur Oasis, locate Zaven the Alchemist, a lone merchant, and kill all the enemies around him. When all the enemies are dead, speak with Zaven, and he will open up the entrance to the Mysterious Cave. Find the Mysterious Chest on the first or second of the Mysterious Cave, and open it up. The Liquid Rainbow is inside the chest. The Mysterious Chest usually spawns on the second level, but it may also spawn on the first level, or it might not even spawn at all!
Gibbering Gemstone: Caverns of Frost, Act III
The final item you need is the Gibbering Gemstone. Go to The Bridge of Korsikk in Act III and find the Caverns of Frost. Again, it helps if you have the Bounty called Clear the Caverns of Frost to lead you to the location. Otherwise, the Caverns of Frost may not have spawned.
Enter the Caverns of Frost and go to Level 2. Kill the boss named Chiltara, and hope that the Gibbering Gemstone drops. The boss always spawns, but the Gibbering Gemstone has a low drop chance, so the odds of needing to attempt this multiple times are pretty high.
Staff of Herding Plans: The Great Span, Act IV
Finally, the plans for the Herding Staff are the last thing you need to put all these ingredients together. Travel to The Silver Spire in Act IV and go to The Great Spawn to fight Izual. Kill Izual and hope that the Plans for the Herding Staff drop.
If the plans don’t drop, you’ll need to restart your game and try again. The drop chance is random, so you may or may not get it on your first attempt.
Crafting the Staff of Herding
After obtaining the Plans and all the ingredients for the Staff of Herding, go to the Blacksmith in any town and right-click the plans to learn them. Then, navigate to the Forge Weapons tab, scroll down to the Staff section, and select Staff of Herding. Click Craft, and you’re all done!
