Halo May Be Moving to Unreal Engine

Nothing official has been confirmed

According to several sources with insider knowledge, 343 Industries could potentially be forgoing their own Slipspace engine in favor of Epic’s updated Unreal Engine 5. The change could possibly be used for upcoming Halo titles, bringing the series onboard with the most advanced engine available at the moment. Of course, whenever a developer decides to change up their engine, it becomes the focus of attention. As of now, this has not been officially confirmed by 343 Industries as of yet. There are clues that point towards the change to Unreal Engine 5, however.

Job Postings Could Hold Potential Clues to the Change

In April, Certain Affinity tweeted about further solidifying their partnership with 343 Industries, stating:

“We’ve been part of the @Halo franchise for more than 15 years and we’re honored to say we are deepening our relationship with 343 and have been entrusted with further evolving Halo Infinite in some new and exciting ways. Join us on our journey.”

In addition, they ended the tweet with a link to job postings, which included Lead Technical Artist as well as Lead Technical Designer. One of the bullet points for the job requirements listed “in-depth knowledge of the Unreal game engine for setting up characters, control rigs, simulation, and blueprints.”

On top of the job descriptions pointing towards recruiting talent well-versed in Unreal Engine, YouTuber ACG (AngryCentaurGamingstated

“I can only confirm that many sources are saying this and very clear that it’s already been decided and Halo is for sure switching to Unreal.

I feel like it’s time for other switches behind the scenes, including people leaving and their past problems. Unreal is a great choice.”

Nothing Official Has Been Confirmed

While there is much speculation and clues pointing towards the move towards Unreal Engine in the Halo franchise, nothing official has been stated. However, if the change is made to the engine, fans of the series can anticipate receiving the most advanced entry in the Halo series yet.
