The Danish video game developer, IO Interactive, is currently developing a brand-new IP set in a fantasy universe.
The Hitman franchise has been a mainstay for single-player gamers since the first iteration of the game, Hitman: Codename 47, released in 2000. Since then, the team has been innovating and re-iterating to bring us one of the best, if the best, assassination game franchises to ever exist.
Details on Project Fantasy
The studio, also known for their other, less celebrated title, Kane & Lynch, will be embarking on a brand-new journey with what they call an “Online Fantasy RPG,” which, for now, has a placeholder name of Project Fantasy.
The post on their website goes on to say,
“It has now been a decade since we first imagined creating a new “World of Assassination” for our HITMAN games. Seven years ago, we launched that world in its infancy and nurtured it to grow to comprise three full games, exciting new game modes, many additional locations, and extra targets… Now we are sharing with all of you, that we are embarking on a new adventure! One that expands our creativity, our capabilities, and in some sense our identity. We are building a new world, a new IP – an online fantasy RPG.”
While little is known about the actual game mechanics, locations, or content — the cover art for the site appears to be a Dwarven-looking creature, an elf, and some sort of mage or wizard. We also see a forest setting, which should serve as one of the game’s biomes.
Though the developers stayed close-lipped, they go on to explain their passion for the fantasy genre,
“To the togetherness, camaraderie, agony, and delight found around the tabletop. For some it meant taking the role of a game master: Part storyteller, part AI opponent, part guide, part villain. For everyone around that table it meant creativity, imagination, building a world together, and a shared goal in creating a great game experience.”
We’re interested to see how they segue what they are known for — gun-based combat — to a fantasy setting with new game mechanics like spellcasting and crafting.
Currently, IO is searching for more help with the game, including programmers, animation specialists, and animators. To learn more about the opportunities, visit the IO Interactive Career page.
