The upcoming Starfield has a premium Constellation edition priced at $299.99 that comes with a custom Starfield Constellation Chronomark Watch, but is it worth it?
In the latest creative marketing campaign, the geniuses over at Bethesda have decided to pair a branded smartwatch with the most premium version of the highly-anticipated Starfield. Known as the Constellation Edition, this premium version will come with extra Starfield swag, including some DLC content, the aforementioned watch, and a “Credit Stick” with a game code etched in it, whatever that means.
The Constellation Chronomark Watch, which debuted at the Starfield Direct event over the weekend, will be featured in-game when it launches on September 6, 2023. The physical watch they are selling, however, will connect to your smartphone and receive notifications, but Todd Howard, director at Bethesda, did not reveal many other details other than that. Luckily, a manual for the watch leaked in 2022 (thanks, VGC), giving potential buyers a sneak peek into what it’s all about.
You Can Really Explore New Surroundings
Interestingly, while most smartwatches, including the “premier” Apple Watch, typically monitor bodily functions like temperature, stress levels, and sleep patterns, it appears that the Starfield watch will monitor conditions in your surroundings. There is a clock, sensor data, barometric pressure, an accelerometer, a magnetometer, and temperature measurements. The watch is able to monitor the weather, including the humidity, chance of precipitation, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed, by connecting to an app downloaded on your smartphone, according to the documentation.
While we’re not really sure about the usefulness of such things, if you were exploring an alien planet, it might actually come in handy, though you’d still need to maintain a healthy internet connection. I wonder if you can get 5G on Mars.
So, is the Watch Actually Worth it?
We’d be lying if we pretended as if the watch would be used for utility rather than novelty. If you’re a big fan of Bethesda games or really love space and want to play Starfield the moment it releases, maybe it’s worth it.
After all, the Starfield Constellation version only costs $200 more than the Premium Edition, so really, you’re paying 200 bucks for the watch and case, since it’s really the only difference between the two.
Smartwatches of decent quality, you know — the ones that actually serve a purpose and monitor your health, can typically be purchased for anywhere between $100 – $800 on the high end, as is the case with the Apple Watch. Or, if you wanted a tool with the same utility as the Constellation Chronomark, you could always buy a Barometer/Altimeter device on Amazon for $40.
That being said, we’re pretty sure those things won’t become collector’s items, as the Starfield Constellation Chronomark will be if the game lives up to all the hype. Whether or not the watch is worth it depends on how much you’d value it, so don’t feel guilty if you’ve got it and want to drop the 300 bucks.
The Starfield Constellation Chronomark can be purchased by getting the Constellation Edition of Starfield on the Bethesda website.
