The midnight launch for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was a smashing success in most locations, with massive lines forming in New York City.
Whether or not Tears of the Kingdom goes down as the greatest game of all time is still yet to be seen, but what is crystal clear is that gamers have been waiting for this launch more than most titles in recent memory. There’s also another interesting phenomenon — the game is a Nintendo Switch exclusive, making physical copies of the title much more coveted.
In this digital world, it’s rare that a midnight launch would be such an event, considering most people can just sit back and download the game at home, but The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is bringing back that nostalgic feeling with massive lines forming for their midnight launch in NYC.
Recently, Washington Post games reporter, Gene Park, shared a video on his Twitter showing the lines for the game.
In the early 2000s, I worked at (the largest) video game retailer as a sales associate. I was around for the midnight launches of titles like Halo 2, so I remember the hype, anticipation, and lines out of the mall’s front door.
We rarely see this phenomenon anymore, for the reasons stated previously — but hopefully, it’s worth the wait for those that took off from work/school to play the game today.
