Mortal Kombat fans can rejoice as the series gets rebooted with modern mechanics and a classic story.
Another iconic series is getting the reboot treatment as it was just announced today that Mortal Kombat’s next entry into the highly-popular fighting game franchise won’t be Mortal Kombat 12, as many had predicted, but instead, a reboot of the original Mortal Kombat game. This all coincides with the franchise’s 30th birthday.
Along with the news that the Mortal Kombat 1 reboot will release on September 19, 2023, for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC, there was also a new, super-bloody trailer that was also released for the game, which was featured on the game’s official Twitter account.
For those that don’t remember, or perhaps were too young when the original MK came out, it was originally released by Midway in 1992. The head villain was the shapeshifting Shang Tsung, who invaded the Earthrealm to battle against the planet’s strongest fighters. In this entry, there is no Shao Kahn or other iconic villains that were introduced in subsequent entries.
The game also featured a pretty limited roster of 7 characters at the time (with Reptile being a hidden 8th character), so we’ll be interested to see how Warner Bros. handles that in the upcoming title, as players have become accustomed to a wider roster of characters from the most recent entries in the game. This will also ultimately affect the esports or competitive scene, which has grown in popularity in recent years.
You can learn more about the game on the official Mortal Kombat 1 website.
