In 2015, as reported by The Verge, Nintendo took a big step into the mobile gaming space by teaming up with DeNA, a Japanese mobile software provider and owner of the Mobage platform, one of the most popular cell phone platforms in Japan. Seven years later, and it looks like Nintendo is providing more resources for the company to flourish in the mobile gaming space.
According to Nintendo’s quarterly earnings report, Nintendo has collaborated closely with DeNA on its Nintendo Account system. Strengthening this relationship, Nintendo and DeNA will now form a new subsidiary called Nintendo Systems Co., Ltd., according to the paperwork.
The goal of the new subsidiary is aimed toward the “Research and development, as well as operations to strengthen the digitalization of Nintendo’s business, in addition to the creation of value-added services,” according to the document. Nintendo will provide 80% of the capital, taking majority ownership of the new property.
According to Giant Bomb, DeNA has developed games like Pokemon Masters, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Fire Emblem Heroes, among others.
While speculative, this strengthened partnership signals that perhaps Nintendo is shifting its video game focus more heavily into the mobile space. From a business perspective, this makes sense, as globally, more people own a smart device than the Nintendo Switch.
