Blizzard is preparing for the launch of Overwatch 2, and they’ve devised what they’re calling the Defense Matrix plan to help protect the integrity of the game, seeing as how it’s going free-to-play. As part of this plan, players must tie a phone number to their account. This guide will show you how to add your phone number to Overwatch 2.
The idea is that this additional layer of security, SMS Protect, will help combat cheaters and toxic players who want to disrupt other players’ gaming experience. SMS Protect also helps protect account security, so it’s a good idea in theory, but it does present some issues.
How to Add Your Phone Number to Overwatch 2
To add a phone number to Overwatch 2, you will need to log into your Battle.net account, navigate to your Account Settings, and click on Add Phone Number in the Account Details tab.
Here are step-by-step instructions on adding your phone number to Overwatch 2:
- Log into Battle.net using a web browser.
- Click on your account name at the top right and click on Account Settings.
- Navigate to the Account Details tab.
- Under the Phone Number section, click on Add Phone Number.
- Enter your phone number and press Continue.
- Check your phone for the security confirmation code.
- Enter the security code and press Submit.
After following the seven steps outlined above, you should see a message that says your phone number was added successfully to Battle.net. Remember, your phone number can only tie to one Battle.net account, which creates a bit of a dilemma.
There are scenarios where some users may not have access to a phone. It’s a glaring issue with Blizzard’s current system, especially for a game suitable for teens. Unfortunately, users are reporting issues using third-party phone services like Twilio, Talkatone, and Google Voice.
While there is currently no easy workaround for this, Blizzard may be forced to do something if it affects enough people. For now, you can refer to the Overwatch 2 Ready Check list to better prepare for launch.
