Facepunch Studios, developers of the wildly-popular survival game Rust, got real-life threats and were forced to cancel their meetup at GDC 2023.
In a world where gaming and real life intersect more often, it’s a scary prospect to think that someone would threaten a developer just for creating a popular game. However, that’s exactly what happened recently to developers of the highly-popular survival FPS, Rust.
According to the tweet from the developers,
“This is not a statement we’re happy to announce. Due to an IRL threat we must take seriously, we’re going to have to cancel the GDC meetup in San Fran next week. If you would like to show us portfolios, talk shop, or get feedback on your work reach out via email!”
They go on to say in a follow-up message,
“It’s important to remember the developers are indeed humans. When threats arise, we make their safety #1. We’d love to see what you make! [email protected]”
The Game Developers Conference, or GDC, is a yearly event that connects fans and aspiring game creators with developers of their favorite games. This year, the event is being held in San Francisco, CA, from March 20-24, and Facepunch developers planned on meeting the team at a local coffee shop.
Hopefully, more incidents like this won’t happen at the development expo. We will keep you updated on this in our News Section.
