Tempest Rising: An Upcoming RTS to Rival StarCraft 2

3D Realms, the developers of the upcoming RTS, Tempest Rising, just released an extended gameplay video showcasing the game.

If you miss the days of the 90s and early to mid-2000s when RTS games like StarCraft 2 and Warcraft 3 reigned supreme, you might have felt pretty neglected over the past few years. Sure, there are a few standouts in the genre, including the recent Company of Heroes 3, but other than that, it’s been pretty slim pickings.

Luckily, the geniuses over at 3D Realms and THQ Nordic have been cooking up a new RTS game called Tempest Rising that looks to be one of the better, more polished RTS games that we’ve seen in development for some time.

Tempest Rising Gameplay Video

The original footage was originally streamed on the 3DRealms Twitch channel. The 18-minute gameplay video details the mechanics and core gameplay concepts for the RTS. Much thought and detail went into gameplay styles, with considerations for high-level play taken into account by the game’s main developers.

Users can take a look at base building mechanics, movement, the different kinds of units you’ll be able to construct, and what combat looks like.

Tempest Rising will have unit synergies, an online matchmaking system with ELO, 3 asymmetric races, and a team that looks to fully comprehend what it means to develop an RTS geared towards casual players and a more hardcore competitive community.

Taking place in an alternate future, players will take control of the Commander of the Global Defense Forces or Tempest Dynasty factions as they seek to understand the Tempest vines that have grown across the planet.

The real-time strategy genre has often been cited as one of the most complex and difficult game genres to master, so it makes sense developers would have strayed away from it, especially considering the dominance of Starcraft 2. However, it’s great news for fans of RTS that a team as dedicated as this is working to create a new game in the category.
