In a grand alliance, Amazon Games and Embracer Group have announced a promising quest: a new, epic Lord of the Rings MMO game.
If you’ve always envisioned and wanted a LOTR MMO (that’s not World of Warcraft) based on the original Tolkien novels, you’ll get your wish via Amazon Games and Middle-earth Enterprises, part of Freemode.
The game is currently in the hands of the skilled elves… err, developers at Amazon Games’ Orange County studio, the same wizards behind the popular MMO, New World, and is set to release on both PC and consoles at an undisclosed date.
Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games, said in a recent press release:
Bringing players a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings has long been an aspiration for our team, and we’re honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this iconic world. We’re also pleased to expand our relationship with Embracer Group following our Tomb Raider deal last year, as they’ve proven excellent collaborators.
This yet-to-be-named Lord of the Rings game is another string to Amazon Games’ bow, adding to the success of New World and Lost Ark, both of which have had issues but are still wildly popular.
Amazon has many publishing agreements, including Throne and Liberty with NCSOFT, Blue Protocol with Bandai Namco Online, and the next big Tomb Raider game with Crystal Dynamics.
Middle-earth Enterprises, with a long-standing passion for Tolkien’s world, has been a stalwart in producing and licensing media based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit for over four decades. They were acquired by Embracer Group in 2022.
We’ll be following updates on the game in our news section.
