This War of Mine is being featured at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City until July 16, 2023, as part of a new exhibit examining the connection between art and video games.
As games continue to evolve and develop as a meaningful entertainment medium, many are looking at gaming in a different light. After all, why wouldn’t they, as video games are nothing less than a worldwide phenomenon, spawning books, television shows, and movies.
This War of Mine is part of a broader gaming exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art titled, Never Alone: Video Games and Other Interactive Design exhibition. According to Paul Galloway, Collection Specialist at MoMA,
“Never Alone seeks to help us understand video games as various parts, different tools, and techniques that designers bring to bear to shape our experience with games,”
This War of Mine is a 2014 game developed and published by 11 bit studios, and has been critically hailed as an accurate depiction of the destruction and pain that war can bring to the innocent civilians that are harmed by it. At its core, it forces its players to look inward at humanity and some of the horrible unintended consequences that are often forgotten in the backdrop of battle.
Here’s to hoping that more gaming titles are recognized for the amazing pieces of art they truly are.
Fans can learn more about the Never Alone exhibit on the official MoMA website. Never Alone: Video Games and Other Interactive Design will be showcased until July 16, 2023.
