Lucky Hit is a new mechanic for Diablo, which was added in Diablo 4. The whole point of Lucky Hit is to balance skills and make faster skills and slower skills more balanced as a whole. In this guide, we’ll take a look at what Lucky Hit is in Diablo 4 and how to calculate the chance to proc a Lucky Hit effect.
What is Lucky Hit in Diablo 4?
Lucky Hit is your chance to proc an effect. Every Skill in Diablo 4 has a base Lucky Hit Chance. The Lucky Hit Chance is the probability that each attack will activate Lucky Hit effects. These Lucky Hit effects can come from gear, nodes in the skill trees, and legendary aspects.
You can see the Lucky Hit effect of each Skill in Diablo 4 by turning on Advanced Tooltip Information in the Gameplay options. After turning on this option, you can open your in-game skill tree, and the skill description will tell you the Lucky Hit Chance.
Faster skills generally have a lower base Lucky Hit Chance, while slower skills have a higher chance. The Lucky Hit Chance makes it so all skills typically have roughly the same overall chance to proc a Lucky Hit effect. Otherwise, the game would be imbalanced, and everyone would use the fastest skills.
In addition to a skill’s base Lucky Hit Chance, items and Skills can also grant bonus chance. The bonus Lucky Hit Chance is multiplicative and not additive, so you should keep that in mind when calculating your chance to proc a specific Lucky Hit effect. For example, if you have a 20% bonus to Lucky Hit Chance, and a Skill’s Lucky Hit Chance is 40%, the new Lucky Hit Chance is 48%, not 60%.
Calculating Lucky Hit in Diablo 4
You can calculate the chance of a Lucky Hit effect occurring by multiplying the Lucky Hit Chance of the Skill by the Lucky Hit Chance of the effect. Let’s look at an example:
Ice Shards is a Sorcerer skill with a 16% Lucky Hit Chance.
Snap Freeze is a Sorcerer skill with the Lucky Hit effect that gives Frost Skills a 3% chance to Freeze.
By multiplying the Lucky Hit Chance of Ice Shards (0.16) by the Lucky Hit effect of Snap Freeze (0.03), you can determine that every hit from Ice Shards has a 0.48% chance of freezing an enemy.
- Ice Shards: 16% Lucky Hit Chance
- Snap Freeze: 3% Chance to Freeze on Lucky Hit
- Chance to Freeze per Ice Shard: 0.48%
However, as mentioned above, item affixes can grant a bonus to your base Lucky Hit Chance. Rings can grant up to 6%, and Gloves can grant up to 11% bonus to Lucky Hit Chance. Let’s assume you have 20% bonus to Lucky Hit Chance from your gear. The new calculation to determine your chance to proc Snap Freeze with Ice Shards is 16% multiplied by 1.2 multiplied by 3%. The new chance to proc Snap Freeze with Ice Shards is 0.576%.
