Xbox Chief on Redfall: “I feel accountable…”

Xbox Game Studio chief Matt Booty recently spoke about the failure that was Redfall in an interview.

Redfall is arguably one of the biggest disappointments in gaming for 2023. Helmed by the brilliant developers at Arkane Austin, the same folks that created the masterpiece that is Dishonored, the game shocked fans when it was released in a nearly unplayable state. Of course, when any major game releases, especially one backed by a titan of the industry in Bethesda, it will make its rounds in the gaming news cycle if it dies on arrival.

The head of Xbox game studio Matt Booty recently spoke to Axios about the abject failure that was Redfall. According to the interview, Booty stated:

I feel accountable that we could have done a better job with Arkane.

Booty goes on to say:

It was a miss, but how much of a miss? I want to support them to be able to keep working to deliver the game they had in mind.

According to the interview, the team is still dedicated to the development of Redfall, hoping for a Cyberpunk-esque reversal on the initial reception of the game, which was largely negative. That being said, the framework for Cyberpunk 2077 was always pretty good; users at first just had optimization issues. We’re not completely sure if that’s the same case for Redfall.

Only time will tell whether the continued investment will redeem the title in gamers’ eyes, though, according to Booty, Redfall is getting “good play” via Xbox Game Pass.
