If you’re looking to create the Staff of Herding on Diablo 3, you’ll probably spend most of your time looking for the Gibbering Gemstone. The Gibbering Gemstone is one of the four materials you’ll need to craft the Staff, and it can be a pain to find. In this guide, we’ll give you some tips and pointers to make your farm a little more efficient.
How to Get Gibbering Gemstone in Diablo 3
The Gibbering Gemstone has a 5% chance to drop from a unique monster named Chiltara in the Caverns of Frost, a two-level cave located in the Act 3 zone, The Bridge of Korsikk. Chiltara is a monster found on the second level of Caverns of Frost.
This item is difficult to farm because the Caverns of Frost does not always spawn, and Chiltara is not guaranteed to be there when the cave exists. You can do a few things to avoid wasting time when farming the Gibbering Gemstone.
First, as soon as you start a new game, look at your Act 3 map, and check for bounties in The Bridge of Korsikk waypoint. If you see Kill Chiltara or Clear the Caverns of Frost, you are guaranteed to have the Caverns of Frost zone on your map, so that’s a good sign.
If you see The Crused Glacier or Clear the Icefall Caves, this means Caverns of Frost has not spawned in your game, and you’ll instead see Icefall Caves. You can immediately leave the game and make a new one when this happens.
- Bad bounties: The Cursed Glacier, Clear the Icefall Caves
- Good bounties: Kill Chiltara, Clear the Caverns of Frost

Next, it’s worth noting the game difficulty does not affect the drop rate of the Gibbering Gemstone. Start the game on whatever difficulty level you feel comfortable running.
If you clear the Caverns of Frost and do not see Chiltara, immediately teleport to town, leave the game, and start a new game. You will save time instead of leaving the game straight from the Caverns of Frost. You can also make sure to activate any Shrine of Fleeting to increase your run speed to make things a little quicker.
Since the drop rate for Gibbering Gemstone is so low, you may find it in your first run, but most likely, it will take you dozens of runs, equating to a few hours of gameplay. It’s all RNG, so you never know when you’ll find it.
