Finding Kellunhelk The Cracked Engineer
Kellunhelk is hidden in the Junkpit, the area carrying the first part of the crashed ship, The Gambler. Here’s a map of the area around his Boss Room.
The path to Kellunhelk is hidden behind a breakable wall in a dead-end room. Look for a long corridor with sludge spawning the damaged robots and a big robot head on patrol. On the right end of the room, break the upper part of the wall by shooting it. This leads to some health pickups and Kellunhelk The Cracked Engineer.
Kellunhelk appears once the giant robot head in the center of the room activates. For now, run by it and pick up the Hazard Blade in the next room before proceeding through Junkpit as normal.
Activating the Giant Robot Head
Once you have the ship part marked by the green icon, you’ll notice the smaller exploding robot heads littering the path back to the surface are now active. This means we can start the boss fight.
There are 2 save rooms a short distance from Kellunhelk; we suggest using the one with the Level-up Statue, as it can repair suit damage from previous attempts. Stand before the big head to activate it and start the fight.
Beating Kellunhelk The Cracked Engineer Boss
Kellunhelk, The Cracked Engineer Boss, has three distinct phases. You’ll need to destroy him to reveal the next phase. Once you destroy his third phase, you’ll have defeated him.
Phase 1
To beat Kellunhelk, Players need to keep moving and repel the big head with melee strikes. As much as it’s challenging to reach this point, the fight is brutal. Kellunhelk himself isn’t that bad, but his friend makes the fight incredibly difficult.
Kellunhelk starts by following the Player closely while lobbing the smaller exploding robot heads from earlier. They’re a little erratic in their movements, so your best bet is to run away from them when possible. They detonate on contact with the Player or a weapon.
We can avoid the damage with 2 different moves that grant invincibility frames: Phase Dash and the Hulking Fist jump attack. Players are guaranteed to see the Hulking Fist pickup on their trek through the Junkpit.
Phase 2
After taking some damage and exploding, Stage 2 begins. The big head will start bouncing around the arena, trying to crash into the player. Kellunhelk is still throwing exploding heads, adding to the chaos.
The Hulking Fist and the Hazard Blade are the best choices of Special Weapons for this fight. Both knock back the big head on every hit. The Hazard Blade doesn’t grant any i-frames, but it safely detonates exploding heads from a distance and at a wide range. These traits are crucial for stages 2 and 3. Remember to focus on avoiding damage over landing hits.
Regarding useful Modules, the Robotic Heart helps by granting Hyper-Armor after dashing. It also reduces blaster heat build-up for players that prefer playing safe. Adam’s Tweak can help deal more damage, especially by melee, but it also increases damage received.
The Cloudburst Rifle Blaster Module lets players deal high damage from range, but it burns energy quickly. More melee-oriented players should use the Plasma Burner. It doesn’t deal as much damage, but it rapidly overheats the barrel to empower melee strikes.
Phase 3
Stage 3 sees Kellunhelk obliterated in another explosion, but the big head is still attacking and faster than ever. The smaller exploding heads still appear more randomly than before, so stay on guard. The same strategy applies, but the fight is more hectic.
After a little more damage, the big head will explode again and die for real, dropping the Berserker Device Module. This increases melee damage and removes the penalties of barrel heat at low HP. A fitting reward for such an aggressive boss.
