Harry Potter fans might be unpleasantly surprised by the latest announcement for the upcoming open-world Harry Potter game, Hogwarts Legacy. Last week we reported on the game’s progress but kept the release date tight-lipped. Now, we’ve been updated by the developer. Keep reading to learn the release date for Hogwarts Legacy and why it was delayed again.

Update 12/13/22: This post was updated to reflect the new release date and early-access period.

When is Hogwarts Legacy Coming Out?

According to the official Hogwarts Legacy Twitter, Hogwarts Legacy will release on February 10, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox X|S, and PC. There will be a 72-hour early access period starting on February 7, 2023. For older generation systems, the game will release on April 4, 2023, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Those with a Nintendo Switch will have to wait for the developers’ update.

Here’s the official Tweet:

Wait, Why is it Delayed, Again?

We get it. You were excited to embody Hermione this holiday season, but sadly–we’ll have to wait for the end of winter instead.

Hogwarts Legacy has already undergone two previous delays, first being announced for release in 2021, then 2022, and now 2023. Eager fans who have been following along with the game are likely disappointed.

Here’s the official statement from WB Games Avalance:

However, with this being said, it’s the first time developers have given a specific month, let alone a particular day for the official launch, so we can expect this time to be accurate. Given COVID-19 lockdowns and the expansive nature of the game, we can assume that the developers would rather deliver a finished, quality product, than rush for this year’s holiday season.

We also know that unlike other games out there, Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t have to rely on holiday sales. While it would be nice, there’s still a large enough ravenous fanbase willing to doll out the cash on a premium title.

We just hope that the money and wait are worth it.
