Octopath Traveler 2: Throne Chapter 3 Mother Route Guide

Taking out Mother in Throne Chapter 3 is no easy task.

In typical Octopath Traveler II fashion, the story segment only has 1 mandated battle: Throne’s fight with Mother. We were unprepared on our first attempt and got thrashed for it. So to spare our readers the same fate, we’ve gathered all the info we can. This is the Throne Ch.3: Mother Route Guide.

Throne Chapter 3: Mother Route Guide

To win the fight against Mother, players need to bring several different damage types and a way to deal with the Terror status effect. We suggest bringing the following:

Consumables:

  • Energizing Pomegranate (M)
  • Empowering Lychee (M)
  • Healing Grape (M) or Quality Jerky
  • Inspiriting Plum (M)
  • Olive of Life (M)
  • Herb of Valor

Team Composition:

Below are the recommended characters you should use for the mission:

CharacterSecondary JobCritical Skills
ThroneHunterHP Thief (Thief)
Precise Shot (Hunter)
AgneaApothecaryDagger Dance (Dancer)
Rehabilitation (Apothecary)
Dohter’s Charity (Apothecary)
TemenosScholarLuminescence (Cleric)

Elemental Barrage (Scholar)

The last Party Member is your choice, but we suggest Hikari, Osvald, or Ochette – someone that can bring the hurt once the shields are down.

Throne Chapter 3: Mother Location

Bring Throne to Wellgrove in the Leaflands to start this chapter. The recommended level is 31. Once some cutscenes trigger, you’ll be led to leave Wellgrove through the South exit to Road to Mother’s Garden.

Follow the road to the house for another cutscene. A couple more steps, and you’ll be in Mother’s Garden proper. There is treasure on the side roads in both sections; grab it while you get some extra levels in. When you are ready, Mother is atop a tower at the end of the garden. Be warned, Once you approach Mother’s Garden, you cannot leave until you’ve won the fight.

Make sure 1-2 of your characters are already around level 30 before approaching the building. You can use the Mother’s Garden dungeon to level-grind, but if your party is too weak, it will be difficult to level up this way.

Mother Boss Fight

Mother herself has a large HP pool and is assisted by Mother’s Aide. We tried to ignore him on our first attempt, and that was a horrible mistake. While Mother is powerful, a large part of her power is through debuffing the team and buffing her Aide. Head this off by attacking the Aide first. He’s vulnerable to Swords, Staves, Fire, and Lightning. Temenos’ Mystic Staff lets him alternate between breaking down the Aide’s shields and supporting the party with spells.

Mother is vulnerable to Daggers, Bows, Ice, and Light. She will strike multiple times, so keep your party’s health high. Throne can use HP Thief and Precise Shot to burn through her shields. Agnea’s Dagger Dance and Temenos’ Luminescence can help too. We like Dagger Dance more because it activates Agnea’s Dance Session every time it’s used. Make sure to use Agena’s Allure Path Action to grab a useful ability; Wellgrove’s villagers have some good choices.

If you need to break Mother’s shields quickly, use Temenos’ Latent Power, Judgement, and Elemental Barrage. This will break 3-5 shields in a single attack or 6-8 when fully Boosted. Try to save this for emergencies, like when Mother boosts her Shield count to 9.

In the second half of the fight, Mother will empower her whip strikes with Terror. This stops your party members from gaining or using their Boost Points. She will attack the entire team on her next turn to apply it. Stunning her with a shield break gives you extra time to prepare but won’t prevent it.

You want Agnea’s Latent Power, All Together Now, ready so you can cast Rehabilitate on your entire party. This cures Terror and will block it from being reapplied. For best results, Boost the cast x3 for an increased duration. If she’s not ready to do this, have the other party members use their turns to give her Energizing Pomegranate and Empowering Lychee

Herb of Valor can also cure Terror, but it can’t keep up with Mother’s attacks. You can use it with Dohter’s Charity to apply it to several teammates in 1 go, but blocking Terror from landing in the first place is stronger. I find the best use of Herb of Valor is to free up someone’s stashed Boost Points for a shield break.

With Mother defeated, Throne is halfway to freedom. We hope you enjoyed our guide. We’re still clearing Throne’s story and those of the other characters, looking for battles that our readers might struggle with.

There’s no shame in seeking help; some bosses are just brutal. Check out more guides like this in our Octopath Traveler 2 Section.
