With the release of Overwatch 2 on the horizon on October 4, 2022, more details are coming out on the popular series’ move to a Free-to-Play (F2P) model. According to Blizzard’s official Overwatch website, “Overwatch 2 going free-to-play is driven by our belief that the game should be played and enjoyed alongside friends”.
This is good news for fans of the series, both old and new because it allows a much broader audience to be exposed to the game. However, because the game is free, there are some caveats for newer players.
Unlocking Everything in Overwatch 2 as Free-to-Play
One of the biggest changes to Overwatch 2 going with a Free-to-Play model is that new players will not have access to all the characters right from the start. Instead, according to Blizzard, new users will go through a First Time User Experience or FTUE. During this FTUE period of the game, new players will need to unlock all of the game modes and characters.
The official website states:
“The first phase of our new FTUE rapidly unlocks all the game modes and the ability to chat in-game, and the second phase unlocks all the original Overwatch heroes over the course of approximately 100 matches.”
That 100-match barrier may seem daunting for someone who just picked up the game, but ultimately, new players will be able to unlock all 32 of the original Overwatch characters for free by simply playing matches.
To enter Competitive mode, players will need to win 50 Quick-Play matches.
Returning Players of Overwatch Have it a Bit Different
For those who have played Overwatch prior to jumping into Overwatch 2, they will have access to all 34 characters of Overwatch 2 unlocked right from the start.
The only character they will be missing is Kiriko, due to her being a Battle Pass exclusive. This experience seeks to give players a smooth transition no matter their experience level with Overwatch, and helps to keep the game safer from those who want to try disruptive behavior, such as “smurfing.”
Overall, the Overwatch 2 F2P model seeks to expand the existing player base of Overwatch 2 and take the series to new heights.
