How to Fix the Player is in a Different Version of Overwatch Error

Here's a few things you can try to fix the "player is in a different version of Overwatch" error in Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 is finally released, and players are excited to try the 5v5 combat with their friends. There’s one downfall, though, as many players are getting a version mismatch error. Luckily, there’s an easy fix. Here’s how to fix the “player is in a different version of Overwatch” error in Overwatch 2.

How to Fix the Player is in a Different Version of Overwatch Error

To fix the “player is in a different version of Overwatch” error in Overwatch 2, there are a few things you can try. First, if you’re playing with a friend, try messaging them, unfriending them, and right-clicking their name in the message to re-friend them and add them to the group.

Due to a server synchronization issue, the solution above seems to work for most PC players. However, if the issue is due to a game version mismatch, you’ll need to ensure all players’ Overwatch 2 version is completely up-to-date.

To update Overwatch 2, follow the instructions below for your platform:

  • PC: Open Battle.net, select Overwatch 2, and click Scan for updates.
  • Nintendo Switch: Find Overwatch 2 in your Library and select Software Update.
  • PlayStation: Find Overwatch 2 in your library, select Options, and Check for Update.
  • Xbox: Go to Manage in My Games & Apps, and select Updates.

Make sure all players in your Overwatch 2 group check to make sure their games are totally up-to-date. If a patch rolled out while you were playing, it’s possible a member of your party updated the game before the rest of the party.

If you continue having issues with this error, we recommend checking the Blizzard CS Twitter account for any updates or announcements about the issue. You can also visit the Overwatch 2 Support page on Battle.net to submit a ticket and receive assistance.
