Sons of the Forest: How to Set Inventory Hotkeys

Stop fumbling around in your inventory.

In Sons of the Forest, having to open your inventory while you’re in combat with opponents can ruin your entire game. Here’s how to set up your inventory hotkeys, aka your backpack.

In Sons of the Forest, the immersion aspect can really start to scare you. However, having to roll out your inventory every time you need to pull out a new item or weapon can break that immersion. Luckily, there’s a backpack mechanic that allows you to quickly switch and set inventory hotkeys, though not in the traditional sense.

How to Set Inventory Hotkeys in Sons of the Forest

Rather than the typical hotkeys that many other games have, where the number keys indicate an inventory slot, Sons of the Forest utilizes the backpack as your quick-switch inventory hotkeys. To access your inventory hotkeys, or backpack, press and hold the I key. From here, you can quickly left-click the item you want to switch to instead of having to roll out your entire inventory.

Players can adjust what they want to equip in their backpack slots by hitting I to bring up the inventory, then left-clicking their backpack. From here, you can remove slotted or hotkeyed items and replace them with other items.

For example, it would probably be a good idea to equip both a melee and ranged weapon for close-quarters and long-ranged combat.

What Should I Put in My Backpack?

It’s really up to you what you want to hotkey, but I recommend slotting things you’ll be using very often, like weapons, meds, and utility items or grenades. It’s a good idea to set your inventory hotkeys or backpack equipment in this case, to consumables rather than crafting materials since those are pretty useless in the backpack.

While the backpack isn’t as convenient as pressing 1 or 2 on your keyboard, it does improve a sense of immersion and is a whole lot easier than rolling out your inventory and having the entire screen obscured every single time.
