Street Fighter 6 Announces Eye-Watering 1 Million Dollar Grand Prize for Tournament

A 2 million-dollar prize pool and 1 million dollar grand prize await professional Street Fighter 6 players for Capcom Cup X, according to Capcom President/COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto at the Capcom Cup IX.

Well, then — Capcom just dropped a massive bomb on players at the end of the Campcom Cup IX, where the champion, MenaRD, took away the title this year. Toward the end of the broadcast, the President of Capcom, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, announced plans for the next tournament, Capcom Cup X, and the biggest prize pool in FCG history.

As expected from many within the community, the next Capcom Pro Tour will feature the upcoming Street Fighter 6, which is rumored to release sometime in 2023.

According to Tsujimoto,

“To celebrate the launch of Street Fighter 6, we are supporting Capcom Cup 10, with a grand prize of 1 million dollars, with a total prize pool of over 2 million dollars.”

The tournament was also announced via the official Street Fighter 6 Twitter. The Capcom Pro Tour will begin in the Summer of 2023, with tournament dates to be announced by organizers for the event.

What’s the Big Deal?

For those used to the prize pools for more popular games like DOTA or CS: GO, a two-million-dollar prize pool is honestly not too impressive. However — if you consider that fighting games are traditionally relegated to the dark corners of Esports and the fact that this is the largest prize pool in fighting-game history, then you can see why so many players are excited to get in on the action.

Add to the fact that this is an upcoming game that only a few have ever gotten to play, and there’s some real potential for some dark horses to take away the championship and the 1 million dollars. All in all, it’s an equation to have some really surprising and historic results.

Regardless of how the tournament plays out, we’re glad that there’s more money being invested into fighting games. This indicates a greater push for companies like Capcom to take fighting-game Esports more seriously in a landscape where Esports is seemingly diminishing in popularity.
