Mount and Blade Bannerlord: How to Couch Lance

Trying to run down enemies on your horse? Here's how to couch your lance in Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord.

Have you always wanted to ride down on someone while on your stallion like a knight at Medieval Times? Well, in Bannerlord–you might be surprised to learn that this is totally possible. Riding your horse at 130 MPH and awkwardly thrusting your lance is not what we mean. Here’s how to couch your lance in Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord.

Fans of the Mount & Blade series might need some clarification. In previous iterations, all you had to do was ride really fast on your horse, and your character would automatically couch their lance. In Bannerlord, there are different attack stances, which will affect how your weapon behaves.

Couching Your Lance in Bannerlord

To couch your lance in Bannerlord, hit the X key on the keyboard while you have a “couchable” lance equipped. Then, you can charge right into enemies and pierce them without thrusting.

To see whether you have a couchable lance equipped, look at the tags below the weapon’s picture for text that reads Couch Lance. If the weapon has the label, you can couch it.

Lance Couching Tips

Here are a few tips you can follow to get the most out of your couched lance in Bannerlord.

  • The turning radius is significantly reduced when couched, so only couch your lance when running straight into enemy forces.
  • Couched lance charges work best within the calvary skein formation and prevent your horse units from getting tied down by enemy infantry.
  • Some polearms will have the text Spear Brace. These polearms can be braced on the ground to stop incoming cavalry charges–a very potent strategy against charging melee calvary.

And there you have it! A couched lance can be devastating in both tournament play and while on the battlefield. We hope this guide on how to couch your lance in Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord helped you on your journey!
