When venturing into the wide-open world of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you will eventually learn about Tera Pokemon – and this generation’s version of Dynamaxing called Terastallizing. When a Pokemon is Terastallized, it becomes a crystalized version of itself and gains increased power for its moves. This can only be done once – and will only be able to be done again once a player visits a Pokemon Center to recharge their Tera Orb.
These Tera Pokemon can be found in the world of Paldea and can also be a part of the new Tera Raids, which are Generation 9’s version of the Raid Dens. But taking on these Terastallized Pokemon can be tricky. Here is everything players need to know to be able to take them out.
Preparing for Tera Raids in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Tera Raid dens are identified by large crystals on the ground that shoot up beams of light into the sky. These can be seen from across the map, and players can approach them whenever they choose to.
However, when interacting with a Tera Raid den, players will notice that it shows them a silhouette of a Pokemon and a star difficulty rating. The higher the star rating, the harder the Raid will be.
In this screen, you can choose to either do the raid solo or search for others online or locally to assist. If you choose solo, the game will provide 3 NPC players to help you in battle. The solo mode works well for any of the lower star ranks but becomes very ineffective as the ranks climb higher.
To combat this, fill your party with a group of players that uses the Pokemon’s type advantage to deal more damage. The more players that can deal mass amounts of damage, the easier the Raid will be.
How Do Tera Raids Work in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?
Once your party is all assembled and ready to go, you will now be inside of the raid den with the Terastallized Pokemon front and center. You and your team will all simultaneously attack the den’s Pokemon, trying to take it out before the time expires.
The Terastallized Pokemon will strike back at you and your team, and can even knock out your Pokemon, at which point you will need to wait a short period of time until it respawns. You can also Terastallize your own Pokemon, but keep in mind this can only be done once; so if your Pokemon is knocked out, it will not be able to do so again for the remainder of the Raid.
With enough damage, you and your allies will defeat the Tera Raid, at which point you will have the option to capture the Pokemon or let it go. No matter your choice, you will get tons of loot for completing the Raid, making these a great source of XP candy and other materials.
Unlocking 5, 6, and 7-Star Raids
When first starting, you will notice that these raids only have the option to go up to 4 stars. To unlock higher star raids in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which contain better Pokemon and loot (but are much harder), there are a few things you will need to do.
To earn 5-star raids, you will need to complete the game’s main story. Once this is done, head to the school and complete the tournament. After winning the tournament, you will receive a message that 5-star raids have been unlocked.
To progress into 6-star raids, you will need to find and defeat 5-star raids until you receive the message that 6-star raids are unlocked. From time to time, there will also be special events that occur where players can participate in 7-star raids. Though not as common, the Pokemon contained in these raids will be very powerful and hard to come by – but the loot will make it worth it.
By gearing up your team to combat these powerful raids, both by being leveled enough and also matching the correct types – you will be able to defeat these raids and become a true Pokemon Master.
