Chitin can be obtained by killing Sawyer Beetle in Smalland Survive the Wilds. These insects are found all over the place, particularly in forested areas near large trees.

They’re more or less an “early game” enemy, but they have a fair bit of health, so it would help if you brought a decent started weapon like a sword, scythe, or bow.
Sawyer Beetles can drop various insect parts, including Beetle Hearts, Insect Fat, and Chitin. Each Sawyer Beetle typically drops 2 Chitin.
As mentioned, Chitin is an item required to craft the Crude Hatchet, a tool used to harvest a variety of plants that will open up a lot of new recipes for you so you can start progressing through the game.
