Undisputed has a steep learning curve, especially if you aren’t already a fan of the sweet science. Here are a few boxing tips and tricks to help you KO your opponent.
Unlike other fighting games, in Undisputed, spamming the same move is likely to get you KOed. The game is arguably the most realistic boxing game ever made, so you’ll need to approach it like a real fight. Here are some critical tips and tricks that you can use to become the Undisputed champion.
Undisputed Boxing Tips and Tricks
In this guide, we’ll cover the following key concepts:
Distance & Spacing
In Undisputed, two ranges will affect how your fighter throws punches. The outside range or jabbing range, and “in the pocket” or close up against your opponent.
Depending on your fighter, you’ll want to maintain the distance at the range that’s best for your fighter. Long, quick fighters will want to stay on the outside and poke their jab to maintain that distance, while shorter power punchers will want to stay on the inside.
If you are the longer fighter, you’ll want to bait your opponent into you and land combinations as they try to get inside. Once the opponent is too close, you can back away by double-tapping a direction or clinch up by pressing the right thumbstick.
Shorter power punchers will want to close that distance and stay inside the pocket, where things like body shots are more effective.
The key is to make it on the inside without taking too much damage and cutting off the ring so that your opponent can’t dodge out of your punching range. As the shorter fighter, it’s your prerogative to close the distance where you can effectively land blows, so you’ll have to chase your enemy around the ring. Concentrate on the body to slow down faster fighters.
Combinations and Power Punching
Players can use either the buttons or the thumbsticks to throw strikes in the game. Arguably, thumbsticks provide more control and easier accessibility to combos, but whether you use thumbsticks or buttons is really up to you. Combinations are performed by pulling off 2 or more actions in quick succession. A common combo is 1-1-2, or jab, jab, cross.
Players should try to mix up their punches to land shots through their opponent’s defense. Rotating between body blows, straights, jabs, and hooks will catch your opponent off guard. To learn some basic combinations, see our Undisputed Combos Guide.
Power punches are easily telegraphed since the travel time is much longer than a regular punch. To power punch, hold down the right bumper while throwing your punch.
Power punches are best used at the end of combinations or when your opponent is staggered or gassed. Certain boxers, like those with the Bomber or Powerhouse traits, will receive a buff to the damage that a power punch does.
Countering
Counters occur when your opponent is overextended or throwing a punch but is interrupted by your punch. When a player counters, the screen will flash white for a second, indicating that the counter successfully connected. When you are countered, your boxer will be staggered for a little over a second. Landing another punch while your opponent is staggered has an increased chance of knocking them down.
Counters are achieved in two primary ways. One way is to slip a punch (left trigger) and throw a punch while your opponent is still off balance. The other way is to throw a punch as your opponent throws, but yours lands first. This is situational and may depend on the speed of the boxer you’ve selected. But, for example, a jab will often land faster than a hook. So if your opponent keeps throwing the same hook, you can counter and interrupt it with a jab.
How to Recover from a Staggering Blow
Unless it’s a flash knockout, players will enter an extended staggered phase before going down to the canvas. The best course of action is to try to wait it out until the staggered phase ends. Players have two main options. One is to keep their distance and block incoming punches. The other way is to clinch, which can be done by pressing the right thumbstick. However — it’s important to know that uppercuts can devastate you when coming in for a clinch, so be wary of that if you choose this route.
Remember — as you are staggered, your opponent will have unlimited stamina, so do not try to engage in this state, or you will likely be KOed.
