Players aspiring to become Viking battlemages can finally rejoice, as Valheim’s Mistlands update is now available, introducing several new items, a new zone, and, what we’re most excited about, magic! In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about magic, magical items, and how Eitr works in Valheim.
In this guide, we’ll discuss the following topics:
Types of Magic
There are now two types of magic in Valheim: Elemental Magic and Blood Magic. The Elemental Magic skill affects damage and Eitr usage when using Elemental Magic. The Blood Magic skill affects your character’s Eitr, damage, and health drain when using Blood Magic. The types of magic you use depend on the magic weapon you use. Dead raiser is a new item that uses Blood Magic, and the Staff of Embers, Staff of Frost, and Staff of Protection use Elemental Magic.
Eitr
These new magic items require something called Eitr to use, which is Valheim’s version of mana. In Norse mythology, Eitr is the source of all living things, and the first giant, Ymir, was created from it. In Valheim, though, it’s basically the substance used for anything magic-related. Your Eitr shows up as a purple bar above your Stamina bar.
To get Eitr, you need to build up your Eitr essence by eating special food containing Eitr.
These are the foods in Valheim containing Eitr:
- Yggdrasil porridge (80 Eitr) – 4 Sap, 3 Barley, 2 Royal Jelly
- Uncooked Magically Stuffed Mushroom – 3 Magecap, 1 Blood Clot, 2 Turnip
- Stuffed Mushroom (75 Eitr) – Uncooked Magically Stuffed Mushroom
- Magecap (25 Eitr) – Pickable
- Mead base: Minor Eitr (125 Eitr) – 10 Honey, 5 Sap, 2 Jotun puffs, 5 Magecap
Refined Eitr
To make magical items in Valheim, you will need a material called Refined Eitr. It’s a long process to craft it, but here’s the shortened version:
- Obtain a Dvergr Extractor and Craft a Sap Extractor.
- Extract Sap from an Ancient Root.
- Chop down Yggdrasil Trees to get Yggdrasil Wood.
- Create an Eitr Refinery and refine the Eitr.
For the sake of brevity, we’ll refer you to our guides on how to get Sap and how to get Refined Eitr. These go into a little more detail in case you’re confused.
Magic Items in Valheim
Now for the exciting part: crafting the new staves. The magic items in Valheim require the Galdr Table. The Galdr table is where players can craft staves, the Eitr-weave set, and the Feather Cape. To upgrade the Galdr Table, you will need to craft the Rune Table. Here are the recipes for both:
- Galdr table recipe: 20 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Black Metal, 5 Black Core, 5 Refined Eitr
- Rune table recipe: 10 Black Marble, 5 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr
The Eitr-weave set is a must-have for magic users, as it offers an Eitr regeneration bonus passive. The Feather cape is also very good, as it grants -100% Fall damage and a Slow Fall passive, allowing you to glide.
