How to Clear Weapon Jams in Escape from Tarkov

Weapon jams occur in Escape from Tarkov when a weapon has low durability and fails to operate. Fixing it isn’t exactly intuitive, so you may wonder how to clear it–this guide will walk you through it.

If you’ve dropped down into the high-paced action of Escape from Tarkov, you might have already had a weapon malfunction. These can be super frustrating, especially in the middle of battle, and clearing them is important if you want to stay alive. Here’s how to do it.

How to Clear Weapon Jams in Escape from Tarkov

To clear a weapon jam, hit L to inspect your weapon, then hit Shift+T to clear the jam. Examining your weapon will identify the type of weapon malfunction your gun is experiencing, and Shift+T makes your character pull back the bolt to fix the jam.

Examining your weapon, then clearing the jam may take a bit too long when you’re in the heat of battle. Luckily, there is a way to bind your keys so that you can check the weapon malfunction and clear the jam in a single keystroke. To do this:

  1. Go to your Settings from the main menu.
  2. Click the Controls tab.
  3. Change the key for Inspect current weapon to H and set the Press Type to Press.
  4. Change the key for Check chamber/Fix malfunction to H and set the press type to Release.

Now, when you’re in-game, hit and hold H to engage the inspect animation, then release the key to fix the jam. This allows you to quickly fix jams without having to press multiple keys.

How to Prevent Gun Jams in EFT

The best way to prevent weapon jams in Escape from Tarkov is by keeping the weapon’s durability high. Weapons above 93% durability will not jam in battle but can still overheat. You can view a weapon’s durability by right-clicking it and inspecting it. You can also repair a weapon’s durability this way.

Weapon Malfunction Types

There are 5 total weapon malfunction types that include:

  • Ejection Failure: The bolt is jammed by a used cartridge.
  • Feed Failure: A bullet has failed to feed into the gun correctly.
  • Misfire: Complete failure of a cartridge to fire.
  • Jammed bolt: The bolt gets jammed. Hard jams take longer to resolve.
  • Overheating: The weapon fails to fire from being fired too much.

Luckily, clearing away the bolt is the main way to fix a weapon malfunction, so it isn’t too complicated. Your weapon will only overheat if shot continuously for an extended period of time, so unless you have a drum or other high-capacity mag, there’s a low likelihood this will ever occur.
